Corequisites/Prerequisites
Fundamentals of lighting techniques for film or video production with respect to lighting tools, composition and camera motion to support dynamic storytelling

Learning Outcomes

Operate standard video lighting equipment including common light sources and lighting modifiers; classify and reproduce standard lighting techniques; setting up grip equipment, common practices, and safety in a video production environment

PSLO 4. Produce a final portfolio and resume suitable for entry-level employment in the audiovisual field.


Lecture Topics Outline

1. Course Introduction, syllabus review

2. Fundamentals of Optics for Lighting: The visible spectrum, diffraction, diffusion, reflection, & refraction of Light

3. Properties of Light: Light intensity, direction, color, & quality, monochromatic vs broadband, & color temperature

4. Understanding Scene Lighting: Contrast ratios, subject/background separation, motivated light, & inverse square law

5. Color Theory in Cinematography: The color wheel & color combinations, mixed light sources, & white balance

6. Video Lighting Sources: Tungsten Lights, HMI lights, fluorescent lights, LED lights, & practical light sources

7. Core Lighting Methods: Key lights, flat lighting, loop lighting, Rembrandt lighting, & other single light techniques

8. Hybrid Lighting Methods: Two-point lighting, three-point lighting, mixed source lighting, & motivated lighting

9. Lighting Modifiers: Fresnels, reflectors, diffusion, nets, grids, snoots, pars, floppies, gobos, cookies, spotlights, gels etc.

10. Lighting Stands & Grip Equipment: C-stands, sandbagging, clamps, apple boxes, baby pins, & vice grips

11. Advanced Lighting Techniques: Book lights, cove lights, artificial daylight, cross key lighting, & bounce techniques

Attendance Policy

Any student more than 15 minutes late will be considered absent. After one absence, all further unexcused absences will cause you to lose credit for the day as part of your weekly participation grade. If there are special circumstances related to your absence such as medical emergency, speak with me as soon as possible and your absence can be excused at instructor discretion.
